NBC: A man is dead and a high school senior shot in the head after a weekend shooting at a busy park in the Bronx, police and family say.
The crowded Haffen Park was the site of a mass shooting Saturday night when gunfire broke out during a basketball game around 7:30 p.m. More than 40 evidence markers covered the court and path outside of it into Sunday morning so detectives continued their sweep of the crime scene.
In the chaos of gunfire, police officials say 32-year-old Jaceil Banks was shot in the chest and ultimately died from his injuries. A 29-year-old woman and two other men, 42 and 30, were also shot and recovering at nearby hospitals.
A 17-year-old girl, identified by her mother as Anthonaya Campbell, was shot in the head. She had just turned 17 on August 8 and was preparing to enter her senior year of high school in Hartford, Connecticut, where she lives now.
“It’s heartbreaking. You don’t give birth to your children and see them set up on a life support unit,” the girl’s mother, Jennifer Talbot, said Sunday.
“She was sitting on the benches with everyone just watching the game.”
The NYPD said four people were in custody and six guns were recovered by the morning after the shooting. Police have not released any details around what led up to the shooting.
