The race for New York City mayor is taking a dramatic turn. A new Marist University poll shows Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani holding a commanding double-digit lead over former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
According to the survey, Mamdani has secured 45% support, while Cuomo trails at 24%. Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa stands at 17%, and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams — now running as an independent — has just 9%. Another 5% of voters remain undecided.
In a head-to-head matchup, Mamdani still maintains a solid advantage: 49% to Cuomo’s 39%. Analysts suggest Mamdani’s lead could expand further if Adams withdraws from the race, consolidating progressive support behind the Queens Assemblymember.
The Takeaway
The latest numbers confirm Mamdani as the clear frontrunner in the mayoral contest. Despite Cuomo’s name recognition and political experience, he continues to struggle to close the gap. Meanwhile, Adams’ weak showing signals shifting dynamics in city politics — and a possible new era of leadership at City Hall.
