Says Current Mayor Is “Out of Touch” With New Yorkers’ Realities

Husneara Choudhury, New York: Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has sharply criticized New York City Mayor Eric Adams for meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his recent trip to Israel. Mamdani said the meeting reflects a leadership “out of touch with the real struggles of New Yorkers.”

“At a time when New Yorkers are living with the fear of losing their homes, standing with someone accused of war crimes is completely disconnected from our city’s reality,” Mamdani stated.

He further reiterated his strong criticism of Israel’s recent military actions, characterizing them as grave violations of international human rights. Mamdani added, “If Netanyahu sets foot in New York, I will uphold the principles of the International Criminal Court. Accountability must apply to everyone.”

Mayor Adams, during his Israel visit, told attendees that Jewish New Yorkers should be concerned about their future safety and that he is committed to safeguarding their community.

Responding to this, Mamdani emphasized his commitment to working closely with the Jewish community. “We will not only protect Jewish New Yorkers,” he said, “we will honor them and celebrate their place in this city.”

Adams was expected to meet with the mayor-elect after returning to the U.S., but he extended his overseas trip with an unexpected visit to Uzbekistan, postponing the scheduled meeting.

With political tensions rising, Mamdani is signaling a shift in the city’s leadership tone: “A new era is coming—one that stands with working-class New Yorkers, not global war-makers.
