Spectrum News: Hundreds of workers and activists rallied outside Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue on Labor Day, calling attention to what they described as an affordability crisis and demanding higher wages.
“It’s not hopeless. There are people with courage. And we’re not giving up,” said protester Helen Krim.
Demonstrators launched the “New York Living Wage for All Coalition,” which is pushing for a $30 minimum wage. New York City’s minimum wage is currently $16.50 for most workers, but protesters said it has not kept pace with inflation as the cost of rent, groceries and other necessities has soared.
“We’re not willing to just go along. The are many, many issues, labor and a fair wage and affordability is one of them,” said protester Naomi Nemtzow.
“Silence is not an option. You’ve got to speak up if you want change,” added Nyvia Edgconve.
Chants of “raise the damn wage” echoed as cars honked in support.
President Donald Trump has defended his record, pointing to what he calls a “worker-first agenda” that includes tax breaks on tips and overtime pay, along with new investments he says will benefit American families.
But critics argue his administration has rolled back union rights and cut social programs.
“The only way to resist this is through regular people, regular workers to say enough is enough,” said protester John McCullough.
In a statement to Spectrum News, White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers rejected the criticism.
“President Trump believes that American workers are the heart and soul of our economy, which is why he’s championed an agenda that always puts them first,” she said.
