A judge has limited the BBC’s ability to revisit the events surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot in a lawsuit filed by former President Donald Trump, which centers on allegations that the broadcaster misleadingly edited portions of his speech in a documentary.
The lawsuit stems from the BBC documentary, in which two separate portions of Trump’s Jan. 6 speech were edited together in a way that, according to Trump’s legal team, created a misleading impression about what he said and the context of his remarks.
Trump’s attorneys have argued that the editing distorted the meaning of his speech and damaged his reputation. The BBC has apologized for the editing but has rejected the allegations of defamation.
Under the judge’s ruling, evidence concerning how Trump’s speech was presented and understood by viewers and supporters may be considered as part of the case. However, the court will not allow the lawsuit to become a forum for relitigating or reexamining the events of Jan. 6 themselves.
Trump has filed a $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC. The case remains ongoing, with further legal proceedings expected as the court considers the claims and defenses presented by both sides.
