A tense situation unfolded in Lower Manhattan on Monday morning after a man allegedly ignited a makeshift incendiary device outside the federal building at 26 Federal Plaza, sending thick smoke into the air and prompting a swift law enforcement response.
According to authorities, the incident occurred around 8:30 a.m., when the suspect used a combination of fireworks and a flammable substance to start a fire near the building entrance. The location houses several critical federal agencies, including immigration courts and law enforcement offices, raising immediate security concerns.
The suspect was quickly subdued and taken into custody at the scene. Law enforcement sources identified him as a 43-year-old former U.S. Army veteran, who allegedly carried multiple weapons, including knives, axes, and a pellet gun at the time of the incident.
Officials indicated that the act may have been politically motivated, as the suspect reportedly displayed a message critical of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). However, investigators have not yet confirmed a definitive motive.
Emergency responders acted swiftly to contain the fire before it could spread into the building. Several individuals, including federal employees and a civilian, sustained minor injuries, primarily due to smoke exposure. No fatalities were reported.
The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force has taken over the investigation and is working to determine whether the attack was premeditated or part of a broader threat.
City officials described the incident as “deeply concerning,” while emphasizing that rapid response by law enforcement prevented what could have been a far more serious outcome.
As of Monday afternoon, charges against the suspect were still pending.
