Leaders of the New York City Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have stated that if Zohran Mamdani wins the mayoral race, he will be expected to fully implement the organization’s policy priorities.
At a recent meeting titled “NYC DSA 101” held on the Lower East Side, DSA leaders described Mamdani’s campaign as being essentially built by the organization itself. They added that, if elected, Mamdani would hold regular meetings with DSA leadership to follow their direction.
Key Highlights:
• DSA’s influence: Leaders emphasized that many members of Mamdani’s campaign team are themselves DSA activists. They admitted his candidacy would not have been possible without the group’s support.
• Policy alignment: As a state assemblyman, Mamdani has already advanced proposals in line with DSA’s priorities — including the decriminalization of sex work and shutting down ICE detention facilities.
• Organizational growth: The NYC DSA chapter has surged to nearly 11,000 dues-paying members in recent years, a rise closely tied to Mamdani’s campaign momentum.
Leaders described the relationship between Mamdani and the organization as “symbiotic,” asserting that if he takes office, his role would largely be to carry out the will of the DSA membership.
