Police arrested 27 pro-Palestinian protesters making their way through Manhattan Monday night, authorities said.
Hundreds of demonstrators said the protests were part of a citywide “day of rage.”
The NYPD believe they were trying to interrupt the Met Gala.
NYPD Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry said the NYPD stopping protesters from interrupting the festivities was “the result of a perfect plan in place so far.”
“I feel like officers don’t get recognized. They don’t get the recognition that they deserve,” Daughtry said. “Not only do they got to deal with protests, but they got to deal with the continuing to keep New Yorkers safe. So when they finish dealing with the protesters here, they have to go back and answer calls for service at 911.”
They started out at 68th Street and Lexington Avenue at Hunter College before hitting the streets. NY1 cameras witnessed protesters being arrested near East 79th Street and Fifth Avenue.
As of early Tuesday morning, police had not said what the protesters had been charged with. This is the latest protest in the city. College students and their supporters have taken to the streets for weeks.
Demands vary from school to school, but one of the common items they want is for the colleges to disclose and divest financial interests with Israel.
