Salman J. Choudhury,New York: A neighbor dispute in Brownsville escalated into a deadly shooting early Monday, leaving two men dead and an NYPD officer wounded, police confirmed.
According to authorities, the incident began around dawn at an apartment building on Thomas S. Boyland Street. Responding officers discovered 41-year-old Leroy Wallace suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body. He managed to exit the building but collapsed on the sidewalk, where he was pronounced dead.
Shortly after, officers approached a first-floor apartment linked to the suspected gunman. As they knocked on the door, the man suddenly opened fire with a shotgun, striking 25-year-old Officer Sharjeel Worris in the face with birdshot pellets.
Officer Worris was immediately transported in a police cruiser to Brookdale University Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
Police returned fire, fatally striking the suspect, whose body was later found inside the apartment alongside a shotgun. NYPD officials stated that the suspect had no prior criminal history.
Two additional officers were injured in a separate car accident while responding to the scene. They were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch reported that Officer Worris displayed “remarkable composure and courage” during the confrontation. NYC PBA President Patrick Hendry added, “He could have lost his life, but his bravery and professionalism saved him.”
The building’s superintendent told reporters that both the victim and the suspect had lived there for several years and that he was unaware of any serious previous disputes between them.
Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani expressed concern over the incident on social media and extended his support to the wounded officer and affected families.
