New York, July 17: Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) recently opened up about her meeting with New York State Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani, calling him “one of the most inspiring young leaders in the progressive movement” and condemning what she called “escalating and alarming” ICE activity in New York City.

At a community event in Queens, Ocasio-Cortez spoke about her discussions with Mamdani, who represents Astoria, on key issues like housing, immigrant rights, and the rising cost of living. “Zohran is showing us how bold, principled politics can still win hearts and deliver results,” AOC said. “It’s time we center people over profit, and he’s been fearless in that fight.”

The Congresswoman also used the occasion to criticize the recent uptick in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in parts of Queens and Brooklyn. Citing reports of raids and detentions, she described the activity as “an affront to the values of our city.”

“We cannot allow fear to tear apart our communities. These tactics hurt families, drive people into the shadows, and make us all less safe,” she added.

Both lawmakers vowed to continue working together on legislation and advocacy aimed at protecting tenants, workers, and undocumented New Yorkers.

Zohran Mamdani, known for his outspoken stance on housing justice and Palestinian rights, thanked Ocasio-Cortez for her support and echoed her concerns about ICE. “Our communities deserve dignity and protection, not persecution,” he said.

Community leaders at the event expressed solidarity with their message, urging residents to stay informed about their rights and report any abuses by federal agencies.
