Major financial setback ahead of the election

New York, August 19, 2025: New York City Mayor Eric Adams has filed a lawsuit against the Campaign Finance Board (CFB), accusing the board of withholding nearly $4.7 million in matching funds allocated for his re-election campaign.
Adams argued that the board’s decision was “arbitrary, capricious, and unconstitutional.” He claimed that the CFB acted out of political motivation, pointing to a previously dismissed federal corruption case that the board allegedly used as justification for freezing the funds.
The CFB, however, stated that Adams’ campaign had failed to provide all required documentation and clarifications. The board emphasized that ensuring compliance with campaign finance laws and transparency is essential before releasing public funds.
With just 11 weeks left before the election, the withholding of nearly $5 million poses a serious financial challenge for Adams’ campaign. His opponents have already received their matching funds, potentially creating an uneven playing field in the mayoral race.
Legal experts expect the case to move quickly in court. The outcome could significantly impact both Adams’ campaign momentum and the overall dynamics of New York City’s upcoming election.
