New York | July 31, 2025: In a powerful display of unity and grief, nearly 30,000 mourners gathered on Thursday at the Parkchester Jame Masjid in the Bronx to bid farewell to NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who was killed in the tragic Midtown Manhattan shooting earlier this week. The Bangladeshi-American officer, only 36, was laid to rest with full state honors in one of the largest funeral ceremonies seen in New York in recent memory.

A Heroic Sacrifice
Didarul Islam was off-duty on Monday when he encountered a deadly shooting at 345 Park Avenue in Manhattan. Without hesitation, he rushed to stop the attacker and was fatally shot in the line of duty. His brave and selfless act turned him into a symbol of courage across the city and beyond.

Funeral and Official Ceremonies
• The janaza (Islamic funeral prayer) was held Thursday afternoon at Parkchester Jame Masjid.
• The mosque was opened to the public at 9:00 a.m. for final respects.
• An estimated 30,000 people filled the mosque and surrounding streets, including over a hundred NYPD officers, religious leaders, political figures, international media, and members of the Bangladeshi-American community.
• NYPD Honor Guard carried the flag-draped casket, saluting their fallen brother with a ceremonial “Final Call.”
• The atmosphere was one of somber dignity, silent tears, and collective pride.

Dignitaries in Attendance
Among those present at the funeral:
• New York City Mayor Eric Adams
• New York Governor Kathy Hochul
• NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who posthumously promoted Didarul Islam to the rank of Detective First Grade
• Officials from the Bangladesh Consulate, Bronx Borough President, and other high-ranking city and state leaders
• Leaders from various Bangladeshi community organizations and a large turnout of youth from across New York

In her emotional remarks, Commissioner Tisch stated:

“He gave his life not only for New York, but for the values we all hold dear — courage, duty, and selfless service.”

Family’s Grief and Community Support
• Officer Didarul Islam leaves behind a pregnant wife, two young children, and an elderly father.
• His father reportedly suffered a stroke after hearing the news of his son’s death, while his wife remains under medical care.
• A GoFundMe campaign for the family has raised over $250,000, as messages of support and solidarity continue pouring in from across the country.
• Social media is flooded with tributes to the fallen officer, hailing him as both a hero and a role model.

Burial and Final Farewell
• After the funeral prayer, the body was taken to the Totowa Islamic Cemetery in New Jersey.
• He was laid to rest with full honors in accordance with religious traditions and state protocol.
• NYPD formally marked the end of his service with a moving “Final Roll Call”:
“End of Watch: Officer Didarul Islam.”

Conclusion
Officer Didarul Islam was more than a uniformed man—he was a living embodiment of duty, dignity, and courage. His sacrifice transcends borders and titles, reminding us that true heroism knows no nationality. New York will remember him not only as a True American Hero, but also as a proud Bangladeshi-American protector whose final act was one of ultimate service.
