East Village, Manhattan: An investigation is underway after a 67-year-old woman was struck and killed by a tow truck in Manhattan Monday.
The crash happened around 7 p.m. on East 10th Street and Avenue C.
Police say a tow truck was traveling southbound on Avenue C and was making a left turn, eastbound, onto East 10th Street when it struck a 67-year-old female pedestrian.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck remained on the scene. “I got close to her, and I prayed over her,” said Natalie Nuñez, the victim’s neighbor.
The Collision Investigation Squad closed the intersection, questioning the driver and doing a field sobriety test as neighbors wondered how fast the truck was going and if the victim was someone they knew.
“I was devastated,” said Joseph Cruz, another neighbor of the victim. “The first thing you think about is your mother or a loved one.”
