A routine extra shift ended in tragedy Saturday when 56-year-old NYCHA maintenance supervisor Leighton Brown was killed after a large section of a tree fell on him at Cypress Hills Houses in East New York, Brooklyn.
Brown was walking through the parking lot when the tree came down during the powerful Nor’easter. Emergency responders rushed him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Friends and coworkers said Brown had come in for an extra shift and was approaching the end of his time at the housing complex before moving into a new position.
The deadly incident occurred as strong winds and severe weather affected communities across New York City. Authorities had not immediately confirmed whether the storm directly caused the tree to fall.
