Richard Gere At 77: The ‘Pretty Woman’ Star’s Journey From Heartthrob To Humanitarian

There is a version of Richard Gere’s story that ends in 1990, frozen mid-frame as he climbs a fire escape with a rose between his teeth.
That version sells the most magazines. It is also the least interesting one.
The real story is a man who, at the height of his fame, stood on the Oscars stage in 1993 and used it to criticise China’s treatment of Tibet, live, unscripted, in front of an industry that would spend the next two decades making him pay for it.

Before the Fire Escape
Born in Philadelphia on Aug 31, 1949, Gere started acting in the 1970s, long before anyone thought to call him a heartthrob.
“American Gigolo” in 1980 gave him his breakthrough.
“An Officer and a Gentleman” two years later made him a star.
Then came “Pretty Woman” in 1990, and Edward Lewis became the role he could never fully escape, a wealthy businessman opposite Julia Roberts in what turned into one of the defining romantic comedies of its era.
They reunited nearly a decade later in “Runaway Bride”, proving the chemistry had not gone anywhere.
Gere’s range extended well past romance in films such as “The Cotton Club”, “Primal Fear”, “Chicago”, and “Arbitrage”.
His turn as slick lawyer Billy Flynn in “Chicago” won him the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy in 2003, following earlier nominations for “An Officer and a Gentleman” and “Pretty Woman”.
But the performance that arguably defined him most was not in any film.
The Speech That Cost Him Two Decades At the 1993 Academy Awards, Gere was handed a microphone to present an award.
He used it instead to speak about Tibet and condemn China’s actions there.
It remains one of the most cited examples of a Hollywood star turning the Oscars into a political stage, and one of the costliest. In a 2025 interview with Variety, Gere said the fallout effectively kept him away from the Academy Awards for close to 20 years.
The moment also became a case study in Hollywood’s growing financial entanglement with China, a tension that has only deepened since.
A Cause He Never Dropped
Gere did not treat Tibet as a career footnote.
