“Islam Is Not a Religion”—Sidney Powell’s Remarks Spark Heated U.S. Debate

Former Trump-aligned attorney’s comments about Islam and Muslims raise questions over religious freedom and political speech

Shah J. Choudhury:
— Former Trump-aligned attorney Sidney Powell has come under criticism following a series of controversial comments about Islam and Muslims in the United States.

Powell operates the X account @SidneyPowell1, where she describes herself as an “Attorney, Author, Gladiator.” Her account has a large following and her posts can reach a substantial national audience.

In a post published on her X account, Powell wrote: “It’s always been a cult. It always will be. Islam is not a religion.” The statement explicitly rejects Islam’s status as a religion and describes it as a “cult.”

In another post, Powell described Islam as “a sick political cult of barbaric sadistic seditionists who seek to destroy America,” using sweeping language to characterize the religion and its followers.

Meanwhile, another statement circulating widely on social media and attributed to Powell says: “There should be NO accommodations for Muslims.” The same quotation describes Muslims as “seditionists” and calls for their deportation from the United States.

However, the full original source of that longer quotation has not been independently verified through a directly accessible primary source. For journalistic accuracy, those remarks are therefore being presented as statements circulating online and attributed to Powell, rather than as independently confirmed quotations.

What the Constitution Says

Powell’s comments have also brought renewed attention to the constitutional protections surrounding religious freedom in the United States.

The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects the free exercise of religion and prohibits Congress from establishing a religion. Political opinions expressed by public figures do not, by themselves, eliminate the constitutional protections afforded to members of a religious community.

The distinction is particularly significant when political rhetoric is directed at an entire religious group rather than specific individuals accused of particular unlawful conduct.

Powell’s Previous Legal Controversies

Powell became nationally prominent following the 2020 presidential election, when she emerged as a prominent legal ally of former President Donald Trump and challenged the legitimacy of the election results.

In 2023, Powell pleaded guilty to six misdemeanor conspiracy charges in Georgia’s election-interference case. Under her plea agreement, she received six years of probation and agreed to several conditions, including issuing a written apology to the people of Georgia.

Religion, Politics and Free Speech

Powell’s latest comments have intensified debate over religious freedom, the rights of Muslim Americans and the boundaries of political speech in the United States.

The controversy also highlights the importance of distinguishing between constitutionally protected political expression and government action affecting religious rights.

For responsible reporting, Powell’s directly verifiable statements on Islam should be distinguished from additional claims circulating online under her name whose original source has not been independently confirmed.
