Husneara Choudhury : Three Indian-origin Labour MPs have secured prominent front-bench positions following a reshuffle in the UK government, further strengthening the representation of politicians of South Asian heritage in senior parliamentary roles.
The newly appointed MPs are Kanishka Narayan, Satvir Kaur and Harpreet Uppal, who have been given important responsibilities as part of the latest changes within the Labour government.
Kanishka Narayan, who was born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, has been appointed as a Minister for Artificial Intelligence (AI). He was elected as the Member of Parliament for the Vale of Glamorgan constituency in the 2024 general election.
Satvir Kaur, the Labour MP for Southampton Test, has been appointed as a Minister for Equalities. Her responsibilities are expected to include issues related to equality, women’s safety and tackling violence against women and girls.
Meanwhile, Harpreet Uppal, the MP for Huddersfield, has been appointed as an Assistant Whip. Whips play an important role in Parliament by coordinating party business and ensuring that MPs attend key votes and support the party’s position.
The reshuffle also saw some changes among other politicians of Indian heritage. Seema Malhotra and Preet Kaur Gill have moved from the front bench to the backbenches, while Lisa Nandy, whose father was born in Kolkata, has retained her Cabinet position.
Meanwhile, Uma Kumaran, an MP of Sri Lankan Tamil heritage, has also taken up a junior ministerial role at the Foreign Office.
The latest appointments highlight the growing diversity of Britain’s political landscape and the increasing presence of politicians from Indian and wider South Asian backgrounds in senior government positions.
The new appointments are also expected to bring fresh perspectives to key policy areas, including artificial intelligence, equality and parliamentary affairs, as the Labour government continues to shape its policy agenda.
