Decision Follows Talks with Centre; Government Agrees to Several Key Demands of Protesters
Sadia J. Choudhury, July 25:
In a major development following weeks of agitation, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has announced the withdrawal of its protest after Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned and the Centre reportedly agreed to several of the protesters’ key demands.
The decision to call off the agitation was announced on Saturday following multiple rounds of discussions between CJP representatives and the central government. The organisation said it was withdrawing the protest with immediate effect following assurances from the government on its major demands.
The agitation had focused on allegations of irregularities and question-paper leaks in competitive examinations, reforms in the examination system, protection of students’ interests and action against those responsible for alleged irregularities. One of the key demands of the protesters was the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Following news of Pradhan’s resignation, celebrations reportedly broke out among the protesters. CJP leaders described the development as a major victory for their movement. The announcement to withdraw the agitation came soon after the talks with the Centre.
However, questions remain over the implementation of all the demands raised by the protesters. The CJP leadership has indicated that it will continue to monitor the government’s actions and the implementation of the assurances given during the negotiations.
With Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation and the CJP’s decision to withdraw its agitation, the prolonged protest has entered a new phase. Attention will now turn to the Centre’s next steps on examination reforms and the remaining demands of the students and protesters.
