New York, September 30, 2025: In a joint hearing yesterday, City Councilmembers Shekar Krishnan and Julie Won highlighted serious concerns regarding the management of New York City parks, green spaces, and the workers who maintain them.
Key Concerns
Councilmember Krishnan stated that the Parks Department has exhibited a “troubling pattern” of awarding contracts to vendors who are often unreliable and allegedly corrupt. He emphasized that such practices not only jeopardize the quality of park services but also affect the safety and efficiency of public spaces.
Focus on Workers and Public Spaces
The hearing focused on protecting both the city’s green spaces and the rights and working conditions of the employees who maintain them. Councilmembers expressed the need for greater transparency, accountability, and stricter oversight of vendor contracts.
“Our parks are for the people, and the workers who care for them deserve contracts with companies that are honest and reliable,” Krishnan said.
Next Steps
Councilmembers are calling for a thorough review of the Parks Department’s contracting process and stronger measures to prevent mismanagement and corruption. Community members and advocacy groups have voiced support for these initiatives, highlighting the importance of safe, well-maintained, and accessible parks for all New Yorkers.
