Entertainment Desk: Late American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and actor Prince Rogers Nelson, widely known as Prince, will be honoured with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award next February.
This prestigious recognition, usually reserved for artistes who have been under recognised, will celebrate Prince’s iconic and influential career.
The Recording Academy has named six other artistes to receive lifetime achievement honours: Frankie Beverly, The Clash, Bobby Jones, Taj Mahal, Roxanne Shanté, and Frankie Valli. Notably, except for rapper Shanté, all of these artistes began their careers before Prince. With seven Grammy wins to his name, Prince has earned more than the other six honorees combined. Beverly, Shanté, and Valli have never won a Grammy, while The Clash and Jones each have one. Taj Mahal has won four Grammys in his career.
Prince has been nominated for a total of 38 Grammys over the years, frequently attending the ceremony to present or receive awards. His last Grammy win came in 2008, when he took home the prize for best male R&B vocal performance for “Future Baby Mama.”
In February, a project by Prince, who passed away in 2016, is also up for a Grammy in the best historical album category for “Diamonds and Pearls: Super Deluxe Edition.”
