South Jamaica, Queens: One man was killed and three others were injured after a shooting in South Jamaica, Queens. It happened around 3:15 p.m. Friday at 143rd Street and Foch Boulevard.
Witnesses told police that an unidentified man approached the four victims, who were standing around a silver SUV, and fired shots at them before fleeing in an unknown direction. When officers arrived, they found the victims with gunshot wounds. A good Samaritan named Jared says he was driving home from work when he saw one of the victims lying in the street.
All four were taken to Jamaica Hospital. A 29-year-old man, who was shot in the back, was pronounced dead. A 43-year-old man is in critical condition, and a 29-year-old and 36-year-old man are both in stable condition.
The gunfire rocked the normally quiet residential block. “I’ve been here for almost 20 years already,” said a resident named Ozzie. “Shocking.” “I’m very surprised. The neighborhood is not like that. You know it’s kind of middle class and everybody knows everybody,” resident Paul Humphries said.
Distraught family members of one of the victims showed up at the scene in search of answers. Officials believe the shooting is possibly gang-related.
One firearm was recovered at the scene but it’s not clear who it belonged to. No arrests have been made so far. The investigation is ongoing.
