New York , Sept. 9, 2025 — The Trump administration on Monday launched a new immigration enforcement operation, dubbed “Operation Midway Blitz,” aimed at identifying and apprehending undocumented immigrants in Chicago and other parts of Illinois. The operation focuses on individuals with serious criminal records.
Objectives of the Operation
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that the operation targets “criminal undocumented immigrants,” particularly those involved in gangs, sexual assault, kidnapping, and drug trafficking. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McAlpine said, “This operation is focused on removing the most dangerous criminal undocumented immigrants from Chicago.”
Local Leaders React
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed concerns over the crackdown. Both officials noted that federal authorities had not provided prior notice to their offices, calling the operation a politically motivated move. Mayor Johnson stated, “This operation is creating fear in our communities and poses a threat to the safety and stability of our city.”
