Year : 1, Issue : 19
by Salman J. Choudhury
It’s a New Year, 2024. Time flies so quick when you’re sitting at home all day doing nothing (yeah, me.) But something that caught my attention from last year was the abudunce of cases of hate crimes and other significant events that could have a detrimental effect on today’s society; Today I will talk about Equality and what I believe.
Equality is an extremely important ideal. All men and women are created equal, and they should always be treated as such. Out of the four ideals in the Declaration of Independence, equality is the most important. As it overall helps society progress together and gives more happiness to all. The four ideals within the Declaration of Independence are all very important and are in place for good reasons.
These ideals set the base for how the country is run and how the citizens are handled. Consent of the governed, one of the four ideals, is the legitimacy and moral right to use state power, which is justified and lawful only when consented to by the people or society over which that political power is exercised.
This ideal is set in place and is important because it doesn’t allow the government to abuse its power over the citizens. The right to alter or abolish the government is another very important ideal. This ideal allows the people to alter or abolish any form of government that becomes destructive and hurts the well-being of the people.
Unalienable rights is an ideal that I think is tied to equality, depending on how important it is out of all four ideals. Unalienable rights ensure that human rights cannot be violated. This is such an important ideal because it guarantees certain privileges and safety for everyone. While these three ideals are all extremely important for the country and its people, I think the ideal of equality is the most important of all. This ideal states that all men and women are created equally.
I think equality is the most important ideal in my eyes because it’s the best way for things such as culture, technology, and society to progress in a positive way so that everyone in the country can live together as equals. Equality gives opportunities to everyone who lives in this country, even if they were not born in the United States. I think equality has somewhat already been achieved from an education and job standpoint. But I do not think “true equality” has been achieved.
Racism, homophobia, antisemitism, sexism, etc. still exist today. There are still many protests and movements regarding equality for certain groups. I think prejudice will always exist because it’s extremely hard to change how people see the world. Overall, I think that equality has been achieved from an opportunity standpoint, but not from a social standpoint quite yet.
