NEW YORK (WABC) — New York City recorded the fewest shootings, shooting victims and murders in recorded history during both July and the first seven months of 2026, according to figures released by the NYPD.
Through July, the city recorded 381 shooting incidents, 462 shooting victims and 149 murders, all record lows for the period. In July alone, there were 59 shooting incidents, 81 shooting victims and 21 murders, also the lowest totals ever recorded for the month.
The department said overall major crime fell 12.7% in July compared with the same month last year, with declines in all seven major crime categories and across every borough. The Bronx led the city, posting a 19% drop in major crime for the month.
Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch said the declines came during a summer that included several large-scale events, including the FIFA World Cup, Sail250 and Fourth of July celebrations.
“This summer, the NYPD was called upon to manage an unprecedented series of major and overlapping events, including the NBA Finals, the World Cup, Sail250, and the largest Fourth of July celebration in the country. Through it all, even as the demands on this department reached historic levels, the men and women of the NYPD delivered double-digit declines in major crime and record lows in violent crime across the city,” Tisch said. “For the first seven months of this year and in the month of July, New York City experienced the fewest murders, shooting incidents, and shooting victims in recorded history. These incredible public safety achievements are the result of our data-driven precision policing strategy and the tireless work of the members of the NYPD whose long hours and dedication continue to make New York City safer.”
The NYPD also reported the fewest shootings ever recorded during a Fourth of July holiday period, with nine incidents between July 3 and July 5.
Beyond gun violence, the department said burglary, robbery, auto theft, grand larceny and felony assault all declined in July. Retail theft was down 15.3% for the year through July.
In public housing developments, the NYPD reported record lows for murders, shootings, shooting victims and robberies during the first seven months of the year.
Not all crime categories declined. Transit crime rose 1% year to date and 10.9% in July, while confirmed hate crimes increased 9.4% through the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period last year. According to the department, anti-Jewish incidents accounted for more than half of all confirmed hate crimes reported this year.
