Mamdani Clears More Than 10,000 Children Off NYC’s Child Care Voucher Waitlist, Bringing Huge Relief To Families

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is taking yet another step to help low-income families in the city. Mamdani announced on Monday that his administration is clearing more than 10,000 children off the waitlist for child care vouchers. The mayor’s latest effort comes as a huge relief for many families who were stuck on a growing waitlist as they aimed to get the state-funded Child Care Assistance Program.
What are elected officials saying about helping New York families get child care?
While the program prioritized unhoused families and those with special needs kids, as well as some low-income households, many others were left on the waitlist for a long time as they aimed to get the child care voucher. Many families removed their children from child care programs because they lost their vouchers, Gothamist reported. During his press conference on Monday, Mamdani said at least 29,000 children are on the waitlist, but they can still get their vouchers in the coming months if they qualify.
Brooklyn Councilmember Lincoln Restler added that it’s important for the city to invest in its local community.
“There are families who will stay in New York City for generations because of this investment today. There are young kids who will get the head start that they deserve because of this investment today. There are child care providers who are struggling to get by, who will keep their doors open,” Restler said on Monday, according to Gothamist.
Gov. Kathy Hochul, who has committed $475 million in state funding to expand the voucher program, said nobody should be struggling to afford child care.
“I’ll keep fighting to deliver universal child care for every family across our city and state,” Hochul said in a statement.
New York City is also providing a child care map to make it easier for families to find programs that accept vouchers.
