Agencies: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday that US representatives in Riyadh proposed a moratorium on attacks on energy infrastructure of Russia and Ukraine.
Speaking at a news conference in the Saudi capital after a meeting with US representatives, Lavrov hinted that Russia rejected the proposal, reiterating that its armed forces only target facilities serving Ukraine’s military.
He said a similar moratorium was discussed last year during negotiations to restore the Black Sea grain deal, but Kyiv had refused to engage in dialogue.
Asked about his impressions of the meeting, Lavrov said Moscow sensed a full US commitment to “making progress,” and Russia shared this approach. Regarding a potential meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, Lavrov said the talks in Riyadh were aimed at laying the groundwork for such a summit and identifying necessary steps to move forward.
Talks between Russia and the US in Saudi Arabia were organized to address issues of mending relations, addressing the conflict in Ukraine, and preparing a meeting between the Russian and US presidents. It marked the first meeting between the Russian and US diplomats since the war began in February 2022.
