I wasn’t the most obedient child to my parents growing up, and for good reason. Most Asian households utilize beating to discipline their children, which may appear cruel at first, but to most parents, it’s just another day of the week with little to no concern.
Parents’ discipline of their children spans from abuse to psychological torture, which they believe is effective, but instead this fear emotion begins to slowly reside inside the children, which is very destructive to oneself later in life. In my experience, I was the child on the other side of the spectrum.
Growing up, I went through a lot, which still haunts me to this day, but I’m thankful for having understanding parents now that they are actually willing to talk things out and listen to what I have to say. My main reason for writing this blog was that for the older generation of parents in our community, it is okay to have a conflicting perspective because then both the parents and the children have room to improve and come to an understanding.
