From Teacher to Head of State: Mirza Fakhrul and an Extraordinary Chapter of Humility

Akbar Haider Kiron

Politics is often defined by turbulent waves and fierce rivalries. Yet, amid decades of intense struggle, imprisonment, and adversity, very few public figures have managed to preserve their humility, grace, and political decorum as steadfastly as Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
On Friday evening, August 21, 2026, in a historic ceremony at the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban, he officially took the oath of office as the 23rd President of Bangladesh, swearing to preserve and protect the Constitution. This solemn moment marks the culmination of a distinguished and multifaceted career spanning academia, public administration, and national politics.
While many political leaders enter the public sphere through direct activism alone, Mr. Mirza Fakhrul’s journey followed a richer, more diverse path. From his active involvement in student movements during the 1969 Mass Upsurge to his early engagement with theater and cultural pursuits, these formative experiences deeply shaped his refined persona. After completing his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics at the University of Dhaka, he chose the noble profession of teaching, starting as a lecturer at Dhaka College in 1972. Following service in public administration and the UNESCO National Commission, he entered mainstream electoral politics in 1988 as the Chairman of Thakurgaon Municipality.
He went on to serve as a Member of Parliament, State Minister, and Minister across various portfolios. Later, for over a decade, he bore the immense responsibility of serving as the Secretary General and chief spokesman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Concluding his long tenure in party leadership, he now assumes the nation’s highest constitutional office. Even through severe political trials and repeated incarceration, his measured, courteous, and dignified discourse consistently set him apart.
Throughout my long career as a journalist, I have encountered numerous prominent figures. Yet, I always chose to observe Mr. Fakhrul from a respectful distance. When he visited New York a few months ago, I felt no urge to join the crowds for a quick greeting or a photograph. As a professional journalist, I admired his foresight, patience, and political character with quiet reverence.
His election as Head of State—achieved through a competitive parliamentary vote, the first of its kind in 35 years—is more than a personal milestone. It stands as an inspiring political precedent: the elevation of an educator, civil servant, cultural activist, and statesman to the guardianship of the Republic.
As a veteran journalist and a mindful citizen, my hope is that he will carry his signature honesty, moderation, and humility into the presidency. Beyond the conventions of traditional politics, may he leave a lasting legacy through visionary and benevolent leadership that earns him a cherished place in the hearts of the people.
To President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, I offer my warmest congratulations and best wishes.
