Former Somerset Police Chief Randy Cox has died, according to a post on social media Tuesday by the police department.
“The SPD is saddened to announce that on Thursday, October 24, after a brief yet fierce fight with aggressive cancer, former SPD Chief Randy Cox lost his battle and passed away,” reads the post on the department’s Facebook page.
He is survived by his wife, Jan, and other family members.
Cox was “completely devoted to the career” and was “passionate about educating new generations of officers and sharing his knowledge and experience gained over his 47-year law enforcement career,” the department’s post said.
Cox served as chief of police in Somerset Borough for 20 years, joining the department in 2004 and retiring in August. He was Ligonier Borough’s police chief before he joined Somerset.
Cox graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Regional Police Academy in 1977 with a bachelor’s in criminology. He also was a graduate of the FBI National Academy’s 24th session, in 2001.
During his law enforcement career, Cox served as lead instructor at the Westmoreland County Community College Police Academy and assessor for the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission. He was a member of the Western PA Chiefs of Police Association and president of the Somerset County (PA) Chiefs of Police Association, according to the social media post. Funeral arrangements had not yet been announced as of Tuesday morning.
