Dhaka Correspondent: Donald Lu, the US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, has arrived in Dhaka on a two-day official visit.
Lu’s flight of Sri Lanka Airlines landed at about 11:30 am on Tuesday (May 14). His previous Dhaka visits, particularly before the 12th national election, were criticised for delving into domestic politics.
This time, however, it is understood that there will be no discussions with politicians. Instead, the focus will be on government-level meetings, with a nod towards engaging with civil society.
The State Department has stated that the primary purpose of this visit, the first high-level one from the United States post-election, is to fortify relations between the two countries. The centerpiece of the agenda will be a bilateral meeting with Foreign Secretary Maud Bin Momen.
Momen said that the meeting aims to explore various avenues for strengthening the bond with the United States.
