Husneara Choudhury:
— A 38-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant, Mohsin Rana, was fatally shot during an armed robbery at a convenience store in Bells, Tennessee, early Sunday morning. Police have arrested 29-year-old Corey Hauge as a suspect in connection with the deadly incident.
According to information provided by investigators, Rana was working at the convenience store at approximately 2:35 a.m. when an armed man entered the business and demanded money. Rana reportedly handed over cash from the register. When the suspect subsequently asked for cigarettes, Rana also complied.
Moments later, however, the suspect allegedly shot Rana before fleeing the scene.
A customer who arrived at the store afterward found Rana lying behind the counter and called 911. Emergency responders transported him to a hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The killing has deeply shaken members of the Bangladeshi community. According to local sources, Rana had been living in the United States for approximately seven years. His two children remain in Bangladesh.
Sources also said that shortly before the incident, Rana had performed two rak’ahs of Tahajjud prayer, a detail that has added to the grief felt by those who knew him.
Following the shooting, law enforcement agencies launched an extensive investigation. Investigators identified 29-year-old Corey Hauge as a suspect and later arrested him during a police operation in Jackson, Tennessee.
Investigators believe Hauge may also be connected to another deadly robbery. Authorities are continuing to investigate both cases and have not concluded the investigation.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is assisting with the investigation into Rana’s death.
The fatal robbery has once again highlighted the vulnerability of workers who serve overnight shifts in convenience stores and other businesses. For Rana’s family in Bangladesh, however, the tragedy is deeply personal: a violent act during a late-night robbery has taken away a father and left two children without their beloved parent.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are expected to release additional information as the case develops.
