New York: The New American Voters Association (NAVA) hosted its 17th annual dinner dance with pride on June 19, 2024, at the World Fair Marina, Queens, NY.
The night featured the awarding of several eminent honorees, including State Senator John C. Liu, former City Council Member and Building Trade Association President Elizabeth Crowley, Lamar Hughes of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), Tom Grech from the Queens Chamber of Commerce, political activist Lois Marbach for her lifelong achievements, Dr. Masudul Hasan, Shah Group and the Flushing Community Center. Each of these individuals and organizations has made remarkable impacts in their respective fields, advancing public service, labor rights, and community involvement.
Congressman Tom Suozzi of New York’s third congressional district gave the keynote speech. He thanked NAVA for their crucial support in his election during the special elections. Congressman Suozzi also underscored the essential role that the immigrant community plays in the fabric of New York, showcasing their contributions to the city’s cultural and economic dynamism.
“NAVA’s work in promoting voter engagement and representing immigrant communities is priceless,” said Congressman Suozzi. “Their work not only encourages democratic participation but also empowers the voices of those who contribute so much to our society.” Queens DA Melinda Katz and Queens borough president Donovan Richards were among the speakers who praised NAVA’s continued community empowerment and its grassroots level work to organize and mobilize the new American community is second to none.
“This year’s honorees have shown outstanding dedication to NAVA’s mission, and we are very proud to celebrate them. For the past 17 years, NAVA has been a leader in addressing the community issues, especially those that affect the New American Communities. We are proud to empower the immigrant community and represent the marginalized people”, Said President of NAVA -Dr. Dilip Nath.
The event highlighted NAVA’s ongoing dedication to enhancing interaction between immigrant communities and their local elected officials, registering eligible voters, and advocating for issues that affect immigrants in New York.
