A Bangladeshi immigrant was killed and another was injured in a shooting at a restaurant in Brooklyn, New York, sending shockwaves through the Bangladeshi-American community.
The victim has been identified as Mohammad Yousuf Raju, 44. Another Bangladeshi national, Russell, 39, was shot and hospitalized with injuries.
The incident occurred at around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, at a fried chicken restaurant on Rockaway Avenue in Brooklyn, where Raju was reportedly working.
According to preliminary information, an argument reportedly broke out between a customer and restaurant staff over a payment. The dispute allegedly escalated, and the customer pulled out a firearm and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
Raju suffered a gunshot wound to the head, while Russell was shot in the leg. Raju was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where doctors later pronounced him dead. Russell remains under medical care.
The New York Police Department has launched an investigation into the shooting. Detectives are working to identify and locate the suspect. No arrest had been reported at the time of the latest available information.
Raju was originally from the Amishapara area of Sonaimuri in Noakhali, Bangladesh. He reportedly came to the United States approximately three years ago in search of better economic opportunities. He leaves behind a wife, three children, parents and other family members in Bangladesh.
Russell is also reportedly from Noakhali.
The tragic shooting has left members of the Bangladeshi community in New York deeply saddened and concerned about the safety of immigrant workers, particularly those employed in restaurants and other late-night businesses.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the motive behind the attack and the identity of the gunman.
