Fauzia J. Choudhury, New York: Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a $100 million initiative to tackle the growing child care crisis across the state. Named the Child Care Capital Construction Funding Program, the program aims to build new child care centers, expand existing facilities, and provide affordable, high-quality child care services for low- and middle-income families.

New Centers and Expanded Capacity

The program is expected to create thousands of new child care seats across New York State. The initiative is designed to ensure working families have access to reliable and affordable child care.

Application Process
• Application Start: January 12, 2026
• Application Deadline: February 13, 2026
• First Grant Awards: April 15, 2026 onwards

Eligible applicants include licensed non-profit organizations, local government units, and approved child care providers.

Use of Funds

The $100 million funding can be used for:
• Construction of new child care centers
• Renovation and expansion of existing centers
• Safety and infrastructure improvements
• Expanding child care services in underserved communities

Each project may receive grants ranging from $500,000 to $5 million, with recipients required to maintain operations for at least 8 years.

Downstate–Upstate Allocation
• 60% of funding will be allocated to New York City, Long Island, and the Mid-Hudson region.
• 40% will be designated for projects in Upstate New York.

Governor Hochul’s Statement

Governor Hochul said:
“The shortage of child care is a real challenge for New York families. These construction grants will help deliver safe, affordable, and high-quality child care to every family in our state.”

A Family-Friendly New York

By easing pressure on child care services and supporting working parents, this initiative represents one of the largest investments in the state’s child care infrastructure. Officials hope the program will strengthen both New York families and the state economy.
