Exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasrin has requested India’s Home Minister Amit Shah to let her continue to live in India.
“I live in India because I love this great country. It has been my 2nd home for the last 20yrs. But MHA has not been extending my residence permit since July 22. I’m so worried. I would be so grateful to you if you let me stay. Warm regards,” she wrote on X post tagging Shah.
Nasrin, a vocal critic of communalism, has been living in exile since 1994. She was forced to leave Bangladesh after facing backlash from Islamist fundamentalists over her writings on communalism and advocating for women’s equality.
Her several books, including her landmark novel Lajja (1993) and her autobiography Amar Meyebela (1998), were banned by the Bangladesh government due to their controversial subject matter.
She spent the next 10 years in exile across Sweden, Germany, France and the US. In 2004, Nasrin moved to Kolkata, India, where she stayed until 2007.
After being physically attacked, Nasrin moved to Delhi, where she lived under house arrest for three months. In 2008, she had to leave India and relocate to the US. A few years later, she returned to India.
